MARYLAND FEDERATION OF ART @ Circle Gallery, 18 State Circle, Annapolis, MD 21401 | Interwoven Worlds: Art of APIMEDA DIasporas

Introducing Interwoven Worlds: Art of APIMEDA Diasporas

Maryland Federation of Art (MFA) and the Asian Arts & Culture Center at Towson University (AA&CC) invites APIMEDA (Asian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and Desi American) artists to share works that express their cultural heritage, reflect cross-cultural influences, and/or convey/incorporate their unique American experiences. Any original 2D and 3D artwork in any media will be considered. Works selected by the juror will be exhibited in MFA’s Circle Gallery in Annapolis from June 26 – July 26, 2025.

The acronym APIMEDA was coined by the Coalition for Critical Asian American Studies (CCAAS) at the University of California – San Diego, and has been adopted by academic institutions and other organizations to be a more inclusive and intersectional alternative to the umbrella term of “Asian American.” While reflecting a diverse range of ethnic, cultural and national backgrounds, APIMEDA also acknowledges the common experiences and overlapping identities shared within this diaspora.

Juror: Nerissa Paglinauan: Program Manager, Asian Arts & Culture Center at Towson University

Born in Baltimore to Filipino immigrants, Nerissa Paglinauan is in her 13th year as Program Manager of the Asian Arts & Culture Center at Towson University where she engages audiences through diverse exhibitions and programs. During that time, she has curated or co-curated 12 group exhibitions, including the annual Asia North exhibition held in Baltimore’s Station North Arts District, all with the focus of centering underrepresented APIMEDA cultures, stories and experiences. Through these group shows, the AA&CC has developed a deep and diverse network of APIMEDA artists based in the Greater Baltimore and DMV region. In 2013, she helped organize Art Filipino: Works by Master Artists, AA&CC’s first exhibition featuring all Filipino artists, with works on loan from the collection of the Philippine Center New York, and from local collectors in the DMV. Paglinauan holds B.A. degrees in Music and Child Development from Tufts University.

ABINGTON ART CENTER @ 515 Meetinghouse Road, Jenkintown, PA 19046 | 2025 Summer Juried Show: The Real

The Real is an exhibition that highlights artists’ technical abilities in rendering real life within art, from realism to hyperrealism.

Artists have a unique ability to blur the boundary between the physical world and the creative plane through their artwork. The effect of such, known as “trompe l’oeil”, has been seen throughout art history, from ancient Greek painter Zeuxis’ grape still life that was so realistic it attracted hungry birds, to contemporary artist Ron Mueck’s figurative sculptures that make audiences look twice. Work that exudes this level of realism continues to serve as an impressive art form and calls for both artist and audience to look closely and partake in the thrill of this expertise.

LEACH GALLERY @ 641 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042 | Viewpoints 2024

Displaying the work of 66 exceptional artists, the show reflects the exhibit’s theme, “Your One Wild and Precious Life,” by challenging traditional notions of time and revealing the profound in the ordinary. According to Juror Sally Morgan Lehman, “It presents a diverse range of artistic styles, from glowing landscapes to elegant abstractions and candid portraits, all seamlessly united by the theme of capturing the transient.” In addition, viewers will experience an exposition of artistic mediums including painting, sculpture, mixed media, ceramics, works on paper, photographs, prints, and more.

Says Lehman, the exhibit is “a testament to the artist’s keen eye for detail and their ability to capture the profound in the ordinary. From the delicate dance of sunlight through leaves to the stolen glances of passersby, each image is a visual poetry that immortalizes the ephemeral natural beauty, mundanity and profound humanity that surround us…[It] seeks to challenge conventional perceptions of time and invites spectators to explore the depth of emotion encapsulated in each fleeting moment. Living in this world of constant movement and change, where moments pass us by in the blink of an eye, these images invite the audience to pause, reflect, and find solace in the beauty of fleeting moments that might otherwise be overlooked.”

The Diversity of Women’s Voices

CERES at 40 and Invited Guests

January 9 – 27, 2024

Opening Reception: Thu, Jan 11, 5-8pm

Ceres Gallery‘s membership celebrates 40 years of supporting and promoting women in the visual arts by inviting women artists from diverse backgrounds and from outside the gallery to join us in mounting a powerful exhibition highlighting sisterhood, feminism and forward thinking.

Ceres was founded in 1984 by Rhonda Schaller, Polly Lai and Darla Bjork, in conversation with NYFAI director, artist Nancy Azara as a program of the New York Feminist Art Institute (NYFAI, 1979-1990). Ceres is a feminist, not-for-profit, alternative gallery dedicated to the promotion of contemporary women in the arts. The gallery provides exhibition space that enhances public awareness and helps remediate women’s limited access to commercial galleries. It also serves as a supportive base for a diversity of artistic and political views. The members of Ceres believe the arts provide an important social service – that art has the power to educate, enhance and enrich the quality and depth of people’s lives.
