I left a badger in Italy

I walked past thick shrubs of green growth,

in the middle of a beautiful summer day,

as the hot Tuscan sun scorched the dusty forest floor.

I climbed over rocks and crawled with my back against the earth,

like a domesticated cat gone astray,

I entered The Castle that Only God Knows.

I left a badger from Abbazia di Monte Olive Maggiori to light the hearth,

emblazoned in charcoal over ruins that lay,

to watch over those who dared to slide under the locked door.
